Injuries, or whinning about them

Feb

So, I last ran about 5 weeks ago. It was a nice 10 miler on a beach path about 15 min. from my house. Later that day, or the next, the inside of my left knee hurt. The same place that hurt after a Half Mary in Oct. I saw my P.T. (a friend) and he told me that I had a tear from a few years ago. I had forgotten. I have a GOOD FORGETTER. Well, I finally got in to see my Ortho dr, got the MRI, and was told that I would feel better if he fixed the tear. But, that is not what he's worried about. He told me that I have the beginning of an arthritic knee.

FDIC 2012 Courage and Valor Run!

Jan

Good afternoon team firefighter from the sunny and warm shores of Charleston West Virginia. Well, they may not be as nice as our California friends but this mild winter is awesome! Actually being able to ride OUTSIDE in January in WV is not heard of but it sure beats the indoor trainer zombies. I just received word that I will be attending FDIC in April and wanted to see if any of our team firefighter friends will be attending. I am looking forward to the biggest fire department conference in the world.

Good afternoon Team Firefighter, I just wanted to share some recently released information. “Rates of overweight and obese individuals in the fire service are higher than those found in the general public, ranging from 73 percent to 88 percent of firefighters.” This is from a recently released study that the National Volunteer Council conducted.

Time for Reflections of a once Couch Potato!

As 2011’s clock is running down I suggest we all take a look at what we have accomplished this year. 2011 was a huge milestone year for me athletically, wow never thought of me as an athlete. Little over one year ago I found myself struggling to run a mile without stopping, now a half Marathon FINISHER! It’s amazing how we go through our fire service careers with blinders on. I certainly had a HUGE set on till 2011. I thought of myself as indestructible and had no clue on how out of shape I was!

New Year’s Resolutions 2012!

Dec

Good morning team firefighter nation. As I enjoy my last long break of 2011 to enjoy Christmas with my family and friends I can’t help but look up to see 2012 staring back. It’s that time of year again, New Year’s resolution time. With that in mind it’s time to readjust some goals, make a plan, and in the words of the Grinch “This time I’ll keep it off”.

Stair Climb Events

Hey guys I got my department into this 4 years back. It's for a good cause & can rope guys into training for something close to us. It's a kick in the butt too. There are full TO divisions and open divisions. We hit up the one in SF at the end of March, but they are offered all over the world all year long. Check the link below.

My training during winter

Dec
07

After resting for 2 days, I started my active recovery workouts. I started low impact exercise by riding my bike trainer for approx. 1 hour. I did not worry about cadence or intensity. I just wanted to get the blood flowing through those sore muscles.

Tomorrow is more of the same: 1 hour on the trainer and some basic core exercises. During my 48, I will work on the elliptical machine and start my weight training program for the winter.
